Frieze! Live! Action!

Frieze London closed the 12th edition of its art fair last Saturday, in addition to the third iteration of Frieze Masters on the following day, both taking annual residence in the autumnal surroundings of Regent’s Park.

2014 saw Frieze London bring together over 160 international galleries from 25 countries, many of which noticeably breaking from the shackles of the ‘white cube’ paradigm with brightly coloured walls and floor decorations. Among the leaders of this trend, Gagosian and Sadie Coles HQ were hoarding large swaths of our attention span, from the entrance lobby. Gagosian’s Carsten Höller installation Gartenkinder (2014) invited children to play with works such as Dice (White Body, Black Dots)(2014) that were minded by qualified nannies instead of the expected colder model-type gallery assistants. HIAP RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

The HIAP Residency Programme is offered to arts professionals from a wide range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, Visual and Media Arts, Dance, Theatre and Literature. A residency includes accommodation and studio space at HIAP Studios free of charge for the duration of 1–3 months. The studios, which combine living and working space, are located in Cable Factory and on the island of Suomenlinna, both in Helsinki, Finland.

Dominique Fontaine is an independent curator based in Montreal, and amongst the four guest curators (Fontaine, Denise Markonish, Magda Gonzalez-Mora and Heather Pesanti) organizing this year’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche in Toronto, kicking off at sunset this 4th October. Fontaine discusses her experience with M-KOS.

MKOS: How did you get involved with this year’s event?

Dominique Fontaine [DF]: A couple of years ago, I was invited to submit a proposal for Nuit Blanche. So, I submitted my proposal to the committee in Toronto who reviewed it and luckily it was accepted for this year’s event. That was a year and a half ago, and since then I’ve been working on the exhibition.

MKOS: Does Nuit Blanche have an overall theme? How did you fit your own curatorial project into this?

DF: Nuit Blanche is simply a celebration of contemporary art. Each curator proposed a project related to the specificity of Nuit Blanche, a 12 hour, overnight event attracting a massive number of Torontonians and outside visitors. My part of Nuit Blanche is entitled “Between the earth and sky, the possibility of everything” but it is not constructed like a traditional thematic exhibition. It is a representation of purpose.
It is a shared workplace.
It is a place of tools, materials and making.
It is a site of production.
It is where the magic happens.

As artists and collaborators, Leslie Mutchler and Jason Urban are interested in the handmade (or in this case, hand-printed) and the duality of actual and virtual, experience and meta-experience. In an increasingly digitized world, traces of the human hand are often revered as signs of authenticity and reality, even when viewed on a screen. For the exhibition, UNIVERSAL, their first large-scale collaborative project, Mutchler and Urban are showing a body of work developed at Artists Image Resource (AIR), Pittsburgh, PA. While in residence at AIR, the pair generated prints and recorded the act of printing, an inherently tactile experience, to be presented as a meta-experience alongside the physical. The creation of three nearly identical prints – a silkscreen, a lithograph, and a woodblock – started an inquiry into the nature of making and the nature of documenting making. Helsinki International Curatorial Programme (HICP) offers curatorial residencies in Helsinki for international curators of contemporary art. The programme is co-organised by Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP) and Frame Visual Art Finland.

The aim of the programme is to provide curators with an opportunity to carry out research and to develop international curatorial projects while building contacts with art practitioners and cultural organisations in Finland.

Curatorial residencies include the cost of travel to and from Helsinki with a grant for living expenses, studio accommodation, residency services and administrative support. HIAP and Frame both offer practical assistance, networks and critical context for the residentsâ’ curatorial research and projects. A public event such as lecture, workshop or screening is organised during each residency. The curators have also access to the international residency community and programme of events at HIAP, while Frame provides extensive contacts to Finnish artists and other arts professionals. Review: Dora García, Of Crimes and Dreams or the infinite power of human mind

Of Crimes and Dreams strips the threshold between reality and fantasy where the two worlds interpenetrate and nourish each other. Upon entering Dora García’s exhibition curated by Chantal Pontbriand, one figuratively experiences a journey into the human psyche and all its complex richness, sequences of altered states and perceptions from waking life to unconsciousness, assisted by García’s use of Finnegans Wake, James Joyce’s last and most experimental novel.

Three videos works projected on the walls of the gallery underline recurrent visual and structural patterns such as circle overlays and echoing effects. Indeed, all videos mirror Joyce’s narrative structure, a never-ending novel, starting and finishing through reconstituted sentences. These seemingly aim to trigger different psychological desires from sexual or voyeuristic desires to the repression of violence or even murderous pulsions.
