The transition from the bright but fragile autumnal sunshine and colours of The Regent’s Park into the 13th edition of Frieze London, which ran from 14th – 17th October, was unsettling. As one’s eyes struggled to adjust to being plunged into darkness and the looming shapes of other fair goers and staff, white daubed slogans didn’t reassure: ‘welcome to purgatory’.
Spine-tingling and mystifying the space was created by the equally mysterious American artist, Lutz Baker, and immediately initiated one into this year’s Frieze Projects. Curated by Nicola Lees, the commissions create hyperreal environments subverting and transforming the visitor’s interaction with the fair.

Papier 15 as always dedicated its art fair programme towards works exclusively made on paper, to include drawings, prints, collages, photography as well as three-dimensional paper-based objects. The annual fair opened its 8th edition between 24 and 26 April, and over the years, Papier’s reputation has risen to now feature among the top do-not-miss events on Montreal’s contemporary arts calendar. For 2015 Papier relocated to Complexe de Gaspé, which is rapidly developing into a new arts hub, housing four floors of artist studios and six artist run spaces in the hip Mile End district. The fair took over the top three floors of this 11-story building filled in natural light, to accommodate 39 galleries from across Canada. Comparatively to previous years, the somewhat leaner line-up of exhibiters did combine many regulars with first timers such as Diaz Contemporary (Toronto [TO]), Lisa Kehler Art + Projects (Winnipeg), Initial Gallery (Vancouver) and Studio 21 Fine Art (Halifax). The smaller numbers of booths were nonetheless particularly well positioned in an otherwise enormous space, circling the middle of each floor to leave a wide walkway around the window-covered external walls, for visitors to also enjoy a 360 panoramic view of La Belle Ville.

In our M-KOS Volta NY report of 2014, we concluded with an open-ended question: “How will Volta take things to the next level?” And the art fair’s answer was to change location. This year it move to Pier 90, adjacent to the Armory Show. A major shift in its eight year history, the fair however retained its distinctive identity by devoting exclusively solo and duo presentations of emerging to established artists. The fair opened to the public on 5 through 8 March in the 75,000 square foot Pier immersed with in day light, a stone’s throw from Armory’s Pier 92 & 94. Volta featured 90 galleries across all six continents, 80% of which were returnees, either from last or previous years, as well as 17 debuting galleries.
