Art Marathon: Independent art fair

The fifth installment of Independent art fair has once more invested the original spaces of DIA Center for the Arts, on 22nd street in Chelsea, New York City. This cozy location in comparison with other, more expansive fairs, did manage to host a total of 56 galleries from 14 different countries, mixing up big and small-scale commercial galleries as well as non-profit spaces across an interior design conceived by architects Andrew Feuerstein and Bret Quagliara. The most exciting features of this layout included triangular shaped booth to agreeably confuse audiences as to where one gallery presentation ended and another one started. Particularly conducive to opening parties, pop conceptualism and junk fluxus, Independent is the brainchild of Elizabeth Dee and Darren Flook, kept in high spirits by creative adviser Matthew Higgs, who also moonlights as director and chief curator of White Columns in New York. All in all, Independent could rightly claim the title of hip alternative art fair within Armory Week.

Art Marathon: The Armory Show 2014

Armory2014_Front
Photo: M-KOS

Armory Week this year coincided with the opening of the highly anticipated 2014 Whitney Biennial, to add an extra layer of fervor to the usual art spectacle that is New York City at this time of the year. Opened to the public from the 6th to the 9th of March, The Armory Show welcomed the 16th edition of its current incarnation, which changed its name from Gramercy International Art Fair in 1999, as homage to the original 1913 gathering. As always situated on Piers 92 & 94 of Manhattan’s western shore, stretching out onto the Hudson River, the fair hosted 205 galleries (146 for Contemporary, 59 for Modern) across 26 countries. Once again Armory opted to hold their VIP preview and benefit opening at MoMA, perhaps rubbing shoulders with the blue chip institution in a bid to upscale its brand and better compete with Frieze, the London based art fair franchise which started-up two years ago on Randall Island, flanked between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Michel de Broin
Retooled Appliances

24 October – 7 December 2013
at bitforms gallery, New York

Michel de Broin is best known for interventions and his refunctionalization of utilitarian objects. Rooted in conceptual premises, de Broin’s work generates unexpected levels of complexity from found objects and physical juxtapositions. Established modes of signification are left behind, yielding retooled technological environments and new possibilities for public space. At times, his ingenuity can be nearly indiscernible upon first glance, appearing as a puzzle for the viewer to complete. For example, “Shared Propulsion Car” is a human powered 1986 Buick Regal that de Broin modified furtively. During the Exit Art biennial in 2005, this revolutionary work was driven through Manhattan, presenting challenges to mid town traffic, despite its petrol free combustion.

Athanasios Argianas
A Sequencer*

2 November – 15 December 2013
at On Stellar Rays, New York

Athanasios Argianas’s work occupies a space between mediums: sculptures become scripts for performances, or arrangements for songwriting, or vice versa. Although his works are often based on translations — or transcriptions — of aural, visual, or textual layers, the systems he creates are open and intuitive, stemming from a genuine curiosity for experimentation rather than a predetermined, result-oriented idea. Accordingly, this exhibition is conceived as a play on indeterminacy, contingency, and the attempt to let the work be shaped by situations beyond the artist’s control.

Frieze New York 2013: Winning over the American Sensibility

Frieze New York closed on Monday 13 May to finish another buoyant edition in its short but very auspicious two-year history. Claiming the Deutsche Bank sponsored event is setting a new standard for cultural tourism in the Big Apple would raise more than one eyebrow, as Frieze functions so differently to fairs and biennales in non-hub cities. It nevertheless has shaken and stirred other contenders off their laurels, such as Armory, and certainly Frieze’s choice of location added Randall’s Island on the art map – a patch of land floating between East Harlem, Brooklyn and the Bronx normally used for music or sporting events – to simultaneously allow art lovers to experience another view of New York’s cityscape on their journey to one of the most exciting shows on the international art calendar.

Erin Shirreff
Day is Long

5 May – 16 June 2013
at Lisa Cooley, New York

For the past few years, Shirreff has explored the effect of mediation on our experience of form. In works that draw together the mediums of photography, sculpture, and video, she has explored how the body responds to moments that are largely imagined, and the uncertainty at the root of knowing something that has transpired in a time or place other than our own.
