The Armory Show 2015

Under the grim wind and snow of a lingering winter, The Armory Show nevertheless started with great excitement and fanfare, warming up the west shore of Manhattan along the Hudson River, set again on Piers 92 & 94 for a 17th year in a row. Armory’s 2015 program ran from 5 to 8 March, hosting 143 contemporary and 56 modern art galleries, stationed within 28 countries. Totalling 199 booths altogether, the fair in fact accepted a smaller number of exhibitors in comparison with 2014, which comprised 205 art spaces. This year’s leaner edition offered a well balanced agglomeration of first timers and returning galleries – some back from last year, others reappearing after a hiatus of five years or more, such as Andrew Kreps Gallery (New York), Carl Freedman Gallery (London), Galerie Lelong (NY/Paris) and galerie kamel mennour (Paris). Now in his third-year tenure, executive director Noah Horowitz’s attempts to revamp the once struggling art fair seems to have paid off – recapturing the interests of many leading galleries.

Feature – A new OFF fair for Toronto

Feature_VIP_1
Feature Art Fair, VIP opening on 22 October 2013. Photo by M-KOS

Feature premiered its four-day fair on 23 October, as a somewhat smaller yet more sophisticated alternative to the Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF). The TD Bank sponsored event showcased no more than two dozen Canadian galleries, cherry picked by Montreal based AGAC (Association des Galeries d’Art Contemporain) to present some of the most forward thinking artists in the region. Inside the main rehearsal spaces of the Canadian Opera Company – a free-standing 10,000 square feet interior in a historic building of downtown Toronto – each exhibitor presented a maximum of three artists, laid out within wide-angled walls that blurred the threshold between the fair corridors and gallery booths. Feature’s limited selection did however reflect the country’s main cultural hubs by keeping to contemporary galleries from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, with the exception of Patrick Mikhail in Ottawa.

Frieze! Live! Action!

Text by Robert Beckinsale

Frieze London closed the 12th edition of its art fair last Saturday, in addition to the third iteration of Frieze Masters on the following day, both taking annual residence in the autumnal surroundings of Regent’s Park.

2014 saw Frieze London bring together over 160 international galleries from 25 countries, many of which noticeably breaking from the shackles of the ‘white cube’ paradigm with brightly coloured walls and floor decorations. Among the leaders of this trend, Gagosian and Sadie Coles HQ were hoarding large swaths of our attention span, from the entrance lobby. Gagosian’s Carsten Höller installation Gartenkinder (2014) invited children to play with works such as Dice (White Body, Black Dots)(2014) that were minded by qualified nannies instead of the expected colder model-type gallery assistants.
