The Artist Expedition Sound Development City was initiated in 2012 by Sound Development with the aim of providing creative freedom to artists working in various disciplines. Each year in late summer, Sound Development City organizes a three-week expedition to two European cities. Ten selected artists working on individual projects are part of the expedition team.
The fourth edition of Sound Development City is heading towards southeast Europe and will take place in Belgrade and Athens from September 9 to 27.
Sound Development City is looking for independent and dedicated project proposals and work theses that are to be tested and put into practice during a three-week expedition to Belgrade and Athens in September 2015.
We are interested in interventions, installations, performances, experiments, moving images, and artistic research projects and concepts which benefit from being on the road, and probe urban environments as sites of both playfulness and social involvement. The projects should be research-based and developed towards this open horizon.
Artists working in all disciplines can apply through the open call process. The key requirements are curiosity, openness to experimentation, process-oriented work, and adventurousness. We also welcome an inter-disciplinary approach and readiness to collaborate. There is no age limit.
An international jury of five will select about ten participants from the submitted applications. The selection criteria are artistic quality, originality and feasibility of realizing the proposed project.
Travel Details
The Sound Development City expedition takes place from September 9 to 27, 2015. The first seven days are spent in Belgrade and the last seven days in Athens. The time in between is to be used for individual travelling from here to there. This journey must be undertaken on the land route and is intended as an integral part of the project work, the research or the working process.
The expedition format itself is meant both as practical instructions as well as metaphor. Sound Development City is a studio on the road, but also an inward journey to personal thought and work patterns, which are challenged through the experience of the unknown and the unpredictable, and could even be re-aligned by it.
In the process, Belgrade and Athens serve as urban resonance chambers, as working material, inspiration and playground for public presentations.
Expenses & Artist Fees
The participation in the project is free of charge. Travel costs, daily expenses and budget required for materializing the individual projects are supplied. In addition, Sound Development City provides a stipend of 3,000 Euros to all participants.
General Conditions & Documentation
The selected artists must agree to take part in the expedition throughout its entire duration. Public presentation and networking events are integral to the program. The Sound Development City team will initiate these events in collaboration with fellow organizations in Belgrade and Athens.
The expedition will be documented in text, audio recordings and images and communicated via a website, an expedition logbook, a Facebook page, a Twitter Account and a self-produced radio broadcast. Sound Development City reserves the right to use work provided by participants and produced for the expedition for press and public relations purposes.
Following the end of the expedition, the participating artists will collaborate with Sound Development City on a print publication.
The works produced during the expedition belong to the artists.
Jury 2015
An international jury of five will select about ten participants from the submitted applications. The selection criteria are artistic quality, originality and feasibility of realizing the proposed project. Besides the project initiators, the jury will be completed by representatives of the cultural scenes of Athens and Belgrade. The jury members will be announced end of April.
