Call for Guest Curator Proposals

Deadline for preliminary proposal: Thursday 28 February 2013

Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal is seeking the guest curator and theme for the 14th edition of its international biennale of contemporary photography that will take place in September 2015. The organization is soliciting brief, preliminary proposals (one page) from which a short list of candidates will be asked to submit more detailed dossiers.

Every two years since 1989, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal produces an innovative photography event that serves as a catalyst for artists, other specialists of the image and the general public. This event promotes different tendencies in contemporary photography and creates international exchanges between photographers, the public at large, curators, the media and collectors. Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal works with museums, galleries, artist-run centres, universities, and a large group of other partners to present a stimulating event that, by virtue of a series of mostly solo exhibitions spread across the city, transforms Montréal into one immense coherent group exhibition organized around a single unifying concept or theme.

Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal invites a guest curator to elaborate a new theme for each edition of the biennale. All the exhibitions, educational activities, the conferences and the publication are all organized around this singular theme. For information regarding the curators and themes of previous events, please consult our website at www.moisdelaphoto.com.

The 2015 Guest Curator will develop a new, bold and innovative theme that lends itself to a coherent program of exhibitions, publication, conferences, etc., that will distinguish Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal internationally and provide opportunities for our visitors to develop a better understanding of the theme and issues in contemporary photography in general. Your preliminary, one page proposal should consider current practices in contemporary photography and demonstrate that the theme would be applicable to an event with multiple venues.

The guest curator will be responsible for:
• the research and proposed selection of the works to be presented in the event.
• providing the information necessary to evaluate the proposed projects.
• the selection of the authors for the publication.
• the selection of speakers for the conferences (which will also address the theme).
• writing texts for grant applications and promotional tools.
• writing a central text for the publication.
• being the spokesperson for the theme and content of the 14th edition of Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal
• respecting the general guidelines that will be transmitted to the shortlisted candidates.

The work will be executed between October 2013 and November 2015.

The guest curator will report to the Director General, work closely and collaboratively with a small and dynamic team, meet regularly with the Board of Directors and keep them abreast of the content, and respect predetermined production schedules and budgets. The guest curator should be available to conduct travels during the research phase (between October 2013 and January 2014). He/she must also be present in Montréal and available to meet with various partners for negotiations during specific periods of the contract. The guest curator will stay in close communication with the team for the duration of the contract, and will work in the offices of Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal full-time during the final production phase (between June 1, 2015 and the event).

Submitting your preliminary proposal

Preliminary proposals must consist of one page maximum of text only (no images) and must be accompanied by a short biographical note of no more than 100 words. The preliminary proposals must be sent by email only in PDF format to soumission2015@moisdelaphoto.com no later than February 28, 2013.

Preliminary proposals that do not conform to the above specifications will not be considered. Please do not send any supplemental materials as they will not be forwarded to the selection committee.
