Institutions By Artists

As the Frieze franchise churns out its London and Masters series in the UK, bringing hundreds of collectors and art lovers into London to trade or admire US$1.9 billion worth of art, Vancouver is amassing over 65 international artists, curators, critics, and academics on the other side of the globe for Institutions by Artists. By contrast this three-day event is assessing and promoting contemporary artist-run centres and initiatives. Mostly non-profit organisations will here explore and advance the common interests of artist-run spaces and collectives, as a culture for catalysing new as well as alternative perspectives for art today. Using experimental formats, performative frameworks and participatory vehicles, the three day series of events is designed to challenge and generate more thinking about artist initiatives globally, to examine their multiple dimensions whether they be in urban or rural, fixed or mobile, local or regional contexts.

The Institutions by Artists program includes five panel discussions: Facts & Fictions, Intimate institutions, States & Markets, Promises & Practices and Erehwon/Nowhere; Keynote presentations include AA Bronson’s “The Transfiguration of the Bureaucrat” alongside an Oxford style debate entitled “Is there space for art outside of the market and the state?” as well as screenings and commissions for live performances and audience participatory events. Moreover, Vancouver based contemporary art magazine Fillip is taking part as as one of the organizing bodies, to present “Print Centre” a parallel event investigating the material culture produced by artist practices within institutions.

Throughout the Institutions by Artists week, Vancouver artist-run centres and community partners are hosting themed exhibitions and projects in association to this convention. The main conference held at the Cinema and World Art Centre can be viewed through LIVE STREAMING videos, beginning on 12 Oct 2012. Full HD version of these videos will also be made available once the event is over, archived on ArcPost.
