In our M-KOS Volta NY report of 2014, we concluded with an open-ended question: “How will Volta take things to the next level?” And the art fair’s answer was to change location. This year it move to Pier 90, adjacent to the Armory Show. A major shift in its eight year history, the fair however retained its distinctive identity by devoting exclusively solo and duo presentations of emerging to established artists. The fair opened to the public on 5 through 8 March in the 75,000 square foot Pier immersed with in day light, a stone’s throw from Armory’s Pier 92 & 94. Volta featured 90 galleries across all six continents, 80% of which were returnees, either from last or previous years, as well as 17 debuting galleries.

Volta 2014 counted a no-mean-feat 20,000 visitor attendance to its four day long SoHo-based art fair, uniquely consisting of solo artist-presentation gallery booths. Sojourning for a second year in its current Mercer Street location, the seven-year-old fair certainly was quick to make a impression on the busy Armory week calendar, from establishing its trademark white-on-black branding to boasting a veritable star-studded string of patrons from Israel, The Emirates as well as numerous local Big Apple-ers.

Boutique art fair shows small is beautiful – VOLTA NY Pt.1

Volta NY inaugurated this year a new SoHo space to host its self-proclaimed “boutique†format art fair during Armory Week 2013, consisting exclusively of solo artist presentations within an invitation-only program of nearly 100 international galleries. The two floors of contemporary art contained in a somewhat cosy venue offered interesting juxtapositions of galleries and works, sometimes competing for attention, but mostly offering complementary dialogues.
