DAVID BEN WHITE
INSIDE OUTSIDE

30 October – 5 December 2015
l’étrangère, London

l’étrangère is delighted to present Inside Outside: a new body of work encompassing painting and sculpture by the British artist David Ben White. Absorbed within the language and aspirations of modernist architecture, design and art, White’s paintings and sculptures disrupt the self-enclosed logic of this prescriptive legacy through a subversion of its objects and spaces.

PAINKILLERS

17 September – 24 October 2015
l’étrangère, London

Private view: Wednesday 16 September 2015, 6.30 – 8.30pm

l’étrangère is delighted to announce Painkillers, which brings into conversation new and existing sculptural works by the Polish artist, Joanna Rajkowska. Noted for her ambitious interventions in public space, as well as her objects, films, photography, installations and ephemeral actions, Rajkowska’s practice interrogates individual and collective bodies as politicised sites of historical, ideological and psychological conflict. For her inaugural exhibition at l’étrangère, Rajkowska unites two object-based series under the rubric, Painkillers, in order to explore the at times uncomfortable connections between modern warfare, healing systems and the practices of Western science.

SUCKERZ

25 June – 1 August 2015
l’étrangère, London

l’étrangère is delighted to announce SUCKERZ, a presentation of new sculptural works by British artists Emma Hart and Jonathan Baldock in their first exhibition together.

Gaping mouths, tongues, nipples, and arseholes occupy the gallery in an agitated display of bodies, orifices and foodstuffs across a messy and precarious banqueting table. SUCKERZ presents Hart’s and Baldock’s exaggerated forms in a carnivalesque conglomeration within the gallery: a series of protagonists and props that invite the viewer into the artists’ unofficial feast.

Théâtre d’objets

16 January – 15 February 2014
at Parisian Laundry, Montréal

Opening: Wednesday 15 January 2014, 18h00

Théâtre d’objets includes one of the artist’s latest series where interests that have been at the crux of her practice are realized photographically and presented in parallel to her sculptures. These images represent staged scenes of puppeteers manipulating objects from the artist’s studio, here Blass provides us with a literal window into the theatre of objects that has underscored her practice for the past decade. The actors in these scenes represent the nuance of her work, they remain in the shadows, subtle and discrete, they are the props for the objects of the artists’ desire. This inter-changeability between subject and object represents the essence of Blass’ captivating visual language. The exhibition occupies both Parisian Laundry’s main floor and the gallery’s bunker space.

John Isaacs
The Architecture of Empathy

19 September – 20 November 2013
at Travesía Cuatro, Madrid

Just as in the works of the exhibition, John Isaacs suggests that empathy is constructed from parallel stories of existence. An architecture which flows through time and space like gravity, binding all together with an invisible power. The architecture of empathy could be subterranean, built underneath our aspirational towers and skyscrapers, channeled through the very foundations of our utopias and constructed from the blood of millions of severed umbilical cords. Here there is no visible landscape other than the peaks of human kindness, and the dark valleys where evil deeds lurk. We, you and I, are fused in this way more profoundly than an other and though it is so, it is often forgotten. All to easily we become lost in a labyrinth constructed of paths burned deep like scorched brands mapping out our daily route to the waking reality of existence. A route which I shaped above ground, in history, by the murderous and the insane, yet that we follow blindly, or look upon with closed eyes.

Papier 13: Local Matters

Papier13_inside

Papier 13 Art Fair proceeded to hold a sixth annual installment in the city of Montreal, this year between 26–28 April. While its tradition continued in exclusively showing paper-based art works, the fair tent noticeably grew in size to occupy 15,000 square feet – a much larger surface than in previous editions – to accommodate a greater number of galleries as well as more spacious lecture and lounge areas. Montreal’s only art fair especially caught our attention this year in setting up shop right on Ste. Catherine – the city’s busiest high street – which naturally allowed for an increase in attendance.

at Parker’s Box, Williamsburg, NY

Artists: Ophir Agassi, Beatriz Barral, Virginie Barré, John Bjerklie, Matt Blackwell, Willard Boepple, Steven Brower, Denis Castellas, Jason Glasser, Patrick Martinez, Philippe Nuell, Bruno Peinado, Mike Rogers, Stefan Sehler, Joshua Stern

This exhibition is dedicated to Nancy Grumbacher (1946-2013)

This will be the gallery’s one hundredth exhibition since it opened its doors in June 2000, and it will be the last in the gallery’s original location on Grand Street in Williamsburg. We hope to re-emerge somewhere soon with a new model, new energy and new ways to promote the best experimental contemporary art.

Parker’s Box has always endeavored to curate challenging exhibitions often involving exploration of some of the more rarefied regions of contemporary art practice, whether in painting, sculpture, video, installation etc. As a commercial gallery, Parker’s Box has always taken pride in making no concessions to that status, in favor of allowing artists a platform of complete freedom on which to experiment.

Hit and miss treasure hunt in the labyrinth – Art Souterrain 2013

AS2013_NathalieQuagliotto_the lost sign_3_564

The Labyrinth themed fifth edition of Art Souterrain indeed furnished a dazzle of art sceneries to mark seven kilometres underground pathways with over 120 artworks. Taking the topic to heart, many works denoted either a puzzling of the visual senses or forms of bewilderment within the self, between societies or geo-political conditions. Mélodie Prégent’s installation “Warren” (2013) combined adjacent mirrors and perspective photographs of empty corridors, stairways and tunnels to create illusions of endless passages. Loren Williams whimsically faked several tunnel entrances, not only to confuse or amuse the audience but also to suggest gateways to fantastic and imaginary worlds. The Semblanze of Control

28 November 2012 – 24 February 2013
at Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros, Mexico City

With an ironic approach towards the many moods that are consumed in the globalized world, The Semblanze of Control is an exhibition that gathers sculptures by Mexican artist Jose Luis Rojas. Composed of boxes of medicine, needles, syringes, cigarette butts and debris, the works show a fascination with miniature objects and a cynical attitude towards the industries of controlled substances and war. Meanwhile, some of the pieces are fragile compositions that point the frantic disposition drug consumption. Rojas playfully exploits the dynamics of terrorism, while approaching the levels of economic, political and cultural fragmentation that lead to the contemporary social tensions.
