Emma Hart and Jonathan Baldock
SUCKERZ

25 June – 1 August 2015
l’étrangère, London

l’étrangère is delighted to announce SUCKERZ, a presentation of new sculptural works by British artists Emma Hart and Jonathan Baldock in their first exhibition together.

Gaping mouths, tongues, nipples, and arseholes occupy the gallery in an agitated display of bodies, orifices and foodstuffs across a messy and precarious banqueting table. SUCKERZ presents Hart’s and Baldock’s exaggerated forms in a carnivalesque conglomeration within the gallery: a series of protagonists and props that invite the viewer into the artists’ unofficial feast.

YASMIN MUELLER
GOSH, I FANTASISE

6 May – 13 June 2015
Maria Stenfors, London

In Gosh, I Fantasise, Mueller continues her exploration of the muse through sculptural objects, with an installation that oscillates between the dreamlike and a hardedge reality.

A series of wall and floor sculptures reveal graphic abstractions intertwined with meaning. Black denim is fashioned into geometric shapes, akin to a soft skeleton or a labyrinth of guts, which starkly puncture the white cube gallery space, claiming its own domain. Mueller’s hand makes the soft material behave like hard metal or more traditional sculpture, and the resulting installation presents a tension between external structure and the inner world.

Interview with Becca Pelly-Fry, director of Griffin Gallery, London

AGS-0178_Becca_Pelly-Fry

Becca Pelly-Fry is the director and curator of Griffin Gallery in West London, located in the same building as its parent organisation ColArt International, the company for world renowned art materials brands including Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris. Since her appointment in 2013, Pelly-Fry has increased Griffin Gallery’s focus on ‘materiality in contemporary art’ and create a space for dialogues through innovative exhibitions and events. In our interview, Pelly-Fry talks about her vision and the gallery’s ongoing commitment to support local, national and international emerging talent.

MKOS: Can you tell us more about the history and mandate of the gallery and how it operates? Is this really the case that Griffin Gallery is that part of ColArt International, a global organisation for art materials, and runs as a privately funded not-for-profit space?

Becca Pelly-Fry [BPF]: Yes, that’s exactly right. The gallery was established in 2012, with the overarching aim of creating a space for display and discussion of contemporary art, a space for artists and ColArt employees to gather. When I took on the Directorship in early 2013, we spent the first few months establishing a five year strategy and a vision for the gallery. At that point we realised that what was going to set us apart from all other gallery spaces in London was our strong connection to the art materials industry – we therefore decided to focus (mainly) on emerging artists with an interest and engagement with materials, and aim to put ourselves at the centre of an ongoing dialogue about materiality in contemporary art.

MATHEW SAWYER
Please Take All Your Rubbish With You

16 January – 21 February 2015
Maria Stenfors, London

I meet with friends
no one but me is aware
I’ve tied one of my shoelaces
tighter than the other
it’s barely noticeable
but at times all-consuming
I bury the words FUCK YOU
set in concrete
to be discovered at some unknown point in the future
how big is the invisible trap?
I stack pennies
37 precarious
one from each year I’ve been here
the newest the brightest
stupid music
I drink myself drunk as I walk
collecting feathers
in the morning a sculpture
please take all your rubbish with you

Comedy and Menace – The Birthday Party

16 November – 28 December 2014
at White Conduit Projects, London

White Conduit Projects opens its central London location at 1 White Conduit Street N1 on 15th November 2014. It will be showcasing Japanese artists and designers alongside British and international artists in a programme of innovative exhibitions across a variety of media.

The inaugural exhibition entitled Comedy and Menace – The Birthday Party is an ambitious project showing works by two artists, Andro Semeiko from Georgia and Shino Yanai from Japan.

Semeiko has exhibited in various group and solo shows in England. This time he will produce work based on the history of the neighbourhood of the gallery, referring to knightly quests and cycling in Islington. Semeiko’s projects often feature knights. – “These clanking, forlorn knights, in their tragicomic search to find something authentic in this synthetic universe. Never perceiving that their mistake is to look for authenticity elsewhere, when it can already be found in their own purposeful, yet hopelessly misdirected quest.” (JJ Charlesworth) Continue reading “Andro Semeiko & Shino Yanai “Comedy and Menace – The Birthday Party” at White Conduit Projects, London”

Confusion in her eyes that says it all

7 November – 13 December 2014
at Maria Stenfors, London

Artists: Tamsin Casswell, Jennifer Douglas, Hans Rosenström

Confusion in her eyes that says it all brings together three artists who each in turn explore perceptions of intimacy and communication, deceptive illusion and control. Humble, everyday materials are transformed, creating new narratives and spaces that draw us in and make us question the nature of experience. Hereby, the exhibition examines the unique perspective an individual experiences at a particular moment in time, and the altered perceptions evoked by an artwork. Text by Robert Beckinsale

Frieze London closed the 12th edition of its art fair last Saturday, in addition to the third iteration of Frieze Masters on the following day, both taking annual residence in the autumnal surroundings of Regent’s Park.

2014 saw Frieze London bring together over 160 international galleries from 25 countries, many of which noticeably breaking from the shackles of the ‘white cube’ paradigm with brightly coloured walls and floor decorations. Among the leaders of this trend, Gagosian and Sadie Coles HQ were hoarding large swaths of our attention span, from the entrance lobby. Gagosian’s Carsten Höller installation Gartenkinder (2014) invited children to play with works such as Dice (White Body, Black Dots)(2014) that were minded by qualified nannies instead of the expected colder model-type gallery assistants.
