Armory Week this year coincided with the opening of the highly anticipated 2014 Whitney Biennial, to add an extra layer of fervor to the usual art spectacle that is New York City at this time of the year. Opened to the public from the 6th to the 9th of March, The Armory Show welcomed the 16th edition of its current incarnation, which changed its name from Gramercy International Art Fair in 1999, as homage to the original 1913 gathering. As always situated on Piers 92 & 94 of Manhattan’s western shore, stretching out onto the Hudson River, the fair hosted 205 galleries (146 for Contemporary, 59 for Modern) across 26 countries. Once again Armory opted to hold their VIP preview and benefit opening at MoMA, perhaps rubbing shoulders with the blue chip institution in a bid to upscale its brand and better compete with Frieze, the London based art fair franchise which started-up two years ago on Randall Island, flanked between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

We’re Looking For You – The Centennial Armory Show report Pt.1

Armory100_DODGEgallery_NY
Homage to Marcel Duchamp. Installation view at DODGEgallery, New York (Armory Focus: USA) Photo by M-KOS

As always since 1913, Armory held this year an impressive show at Piers 92 & 94 in New York City, on the extended weekend of 7-10 March. The world’s oldest art fair surprisingly made little fanfare of its centennial edition, other than to boast historical landmarks on its website. Hardly any educational effort was exerted outside of VIP conferences, for example to nod at the initial 69th Armory Regiment venue, which the fair got its name from. Some exhibitors such as DODGEgallery and Francis M. Naumann Fine Art (both New York based) did theme their booth on iconic works by Marcel Duchamp, recalling his impact at the inaugural show, one hundred years ago.

Art Marathon: The Armory Show 2012, part 1

With the stars and stripes sailing in the wind against the cloudless sky, a proud and powerful symbol high atop the venue for one of the largest art fairs in the world, the 14th edition of Armory Show is showing no fear from its looming competitor, as the first New York showcase of British fair mongers Frieze are threatening to impose their dominance in May. This year the Armory fair revived its old image when totally redesigning their long time venues Pier 92 & 94 and decreased their number of exhibitors (228 instead of 274 in 2011) that include Focus: Nordic bringing in a touch of Scandinavia. Armory 2012 has reported a huge turn up of visitors (more than 60,000) and many galleries had impressive sales results. Same as usual then? NY contributor Sebastian Kaempf visited the fair to bring M-KOS readers a visual sampler of the action on site.
